Single storey rear extension and internal alterations to a detached period property

This project involved internal alterations and new rear extension to a beautiful detached period property. The original building dates from the late 1700s and has been largely unaltered throughout that time with the layout primarily comprising of 4 square rooms at each level. This is very common of this type of property and whilst it had certainly retained its charm over the years, it now needed improving and updating in accordance with a more modern style of living.

The rear extension housed a new open plan kitchen and living area looking out onto the rear garden. The front room was incorporated into the kitchen space but retained as a more traditional dining room.

The original plot shape proved to be a little challenging with regard to the land to the right of the building. Rather than leaving this as an outdoor storage area we incorporated a new utility space within the rear extension which proved invaluable when linked to the new living area, providing excellent storage and enabling the white goods to be stored out of sight from the beautifully designed kitchen.

The exterior finishes of the new extension are what really sets this design off, with an amazing contrast of traditional and modern materials which enhance the buildings original qualities perfectly. We opted for a traditional brick finish to match the front of the original property but with a modern zinc roof construction over. However, what really brings everything together are the black steel framed windows and doors to the rear, constructed and supplied by Fabco Sanctuary (http://fabcosanctuary.com). They provide a perfect blend of modern design coupled with older construction methods.

The building works were carried out by Datum Point Construction, who did a magnificent job (https://datumpoint.org.uk).

“We’d recommend Chris in a heartbeat! Not only were our builders super-impressed with his technical drawings, but he was a pleasure to work with from start to finish. Chris is honest, tactful and cost conscious and his primary aim is to make his clients happy. We lost count of the times Chris went above and beyond for us - liaising with structural engineers and providing additional drawings for our window manufacturers. Chris took the stress out of the whole experience for us - we couldn’t (and wouldn’t) have done it without him. Bottom line: Chris rocks!”
